Donald Frizell Hyde, a celebrated collector of Samuel Johnson and James Boswell, was born in Chillicothe, Ohio, on 17 April 1909. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1929 and from Harvard Law School in 1932. Born in Northumberland, his family travelled extensively; he attended Cambridge, but did not take a degree.
